Initially during 2003 the object of the enterprise was to help the rural people of West Bengal, India to impart some training in vocational work so that they can improve their living standards. So training in Jute handicrafts were selected as a means to this end. But after some time it was observed that though they had become good artisans but they were finding it difficult to procure the raw materials and also there was a big deficiency on their part to market the products. Taking advantage of this situation they fell prey to some middlemen who at nominal costs for their labour and by charging high interest rates for the raw materials that they would supply to the artisans started exploiting them, the result, they remained what they were earlier. To overcome this situation this business entity was formed who managed the raw materials procurement and also marketing of the products. By paying them fair wages for their valuable craftsmanship. It was then a marketing policy evolved and it was decided in principle that this enterprise will only secure orders from the end users and shall only cater to the end users requirements, thus eliminating any middlemen in the processThis had a two way benefit, the craftsmen would get a fair remuneration for their jobs and the products could be offered at cheaper rates by eliminating the middleman's margins. With organized procurement and marketing the number of beneficiaries of this project is registering a steady growth and we have some very satisfied self help groups who are reaping the benefits of this scheme. The business enterprise is also being relieved of the manufacturing activities and is focused in procurement and marketing of the products.
