Taza Weaving Cooperative Morocco

The Taza Weaving Cooperative consists of 17 Moroccan women whose life work is weaving magnificent Moroccan Berber carpets, a tradition passed down in the community from generation to generation. Their cooperative has offered local Moroccans hand knotted carpets since 1978, and now, with the help of a Peace Corps Volunteer, the women are attempting to increase their sales by selling to an international market. Taza, a city of rich history nestled between the Riff and Middle Atlas mountains in Northern Morocco, produces some of the highest-quality pieces of handmade fabrics in the country. By combining traditional weaving methods derived from centuries of the intermingling of practicality and beauty, the weavers of Taza project their Berber culture into fantastically beautiful textiles. The cooperative was founded in Taza in 1978 by a group of 7 weavers who wished to combine their talents and create an atmosphere in which their skills could be given free-reign. 17 weavers currently comprise the cooperative, producing a variety of carpets and rugs out of the highest quality wool, each knot telling a piece of the history of Morocco. By making a purchase, you will help preserve local traditions and culture while also acquiring a timeless piece of art, worthy of being passed down in your family from generation to generation.
