Therefore, in order to enhance the stability and content of ascorbic acid in the solutions, ethyl ascorbyl ether, which is the derivative of ascorbic acid with ethyl group instead of hydroxyl group, is used in many cases. The ethyl ascorbic ether is more stable and has a higher antioxidant property than the ascorbic acid. Furthermore, it can be dissolved in lipid, alcohol and various organic solvents. Therefore, as an antioxidant for cosmetic materials of water-soluble and oil-soluble compounds, it has been developed in many cosmetic formulations.
Ascorbic acid is the major water-soluble antioxidant and important in collagen formation, the skin, bone and blood vessels. As an antioxidant, ascorbic acid plays an important role for skin care and the inhibition of the melanin formation. The skin color varies with the amount of an epidermal pigment named melanin. The major function of melanin is to protect the skin against ultraviolet radiation, but excess melanin makes the skin color dim.
