1. Asphalt and Road Paving Sector
Formany years, Gilsonite has been used in the oilfield as an additiveindrilling fluids. Gilsonite, in various grades and formulations, hasbeenused to combat borehole instability problems,
providelubricity,especially in highly deviated holes, and more recently as abridgingagent to combat differential pressure sticking and provide alawinvasion coring fluid. It has been well documented
thatappropriatelyformulated Gilsonite products can minimize hole collapsein formationscontaining water-sensitive, sloughing shales and reducestuck pipeproblems by forming a thin wall cake and an
inter-matrixfilter cake.
Gilsonite products are currently being widely used inwater based, oilbased, and synthetic based mud systems worldwide.Blended Gilsonite hasproved to be very effective in all water-basedsystems,
with theflagship product in this line being Bore-Plate(R)Shale Stabilizer.
2. Oil Sector
Gilsonite is used in drillingmud fluids and oil well cementing.Gilsonite, in a range of softeningpoints and particle sizes, is astandard ingredient in oil-baseddrilling muds used in shales and
otherdifficult geological formations.The addition of specially-treatedGilsonite to water-based drillingfluids helps minimize hole washout bystabilizing troublesome shales,and seals off highly
permeable sandswhile reducing torque and drag. Theaddition of Gilsonite to oil wellcements reduces slurry weight withoutloss of compressive strength andacts as an effective bridging andplugging
agent to seal fractures inweak formations while cementing

Gilsoniteis used as a performance-enhancing agent for asphaltmixes.Gilsonite-modified paving mixes achieve higher PG gradesandincorporate perfectly into the asphalt blend with no need forhighshear
milling as is the case with many othermodifiers.Gilsonite-modified asphalts have higher stability, reduceddeformation,reduced temperature susceptibility and increased resistanceto waterstripping
than non-modified asphalts. Gilsonite is also used tomakeboth solvent-based and emulsion pavement sealers withsuperiorappearance and weathering properties.
