We have mentioned before that there are three types of shaft seals for slurry pumps: packing seals, impeller seals, and mechanical seals. Among them, the packing seal is the most common in our use because of its simple structure, low price, and reliable operation. Therefore, in working conditions that do not have particularly high environmental requirements on site, this seal is the most widely used.

However, the packing seal will leak after being used for a period of time. Although it is normal for this kind of seal to leak, it is abnormal once the leakage increases. Today we will talk about several causes of packing seal leakage.

1. The filling quality is not good. There are good and bad fillers. The filler material is generally asbestos, and the better ones are polytetrafluoroethylene. If the quality of the selected packing is not good, it will wear out in a short period of time. Once the packing wears out, the leakage will of course be large. Also, the filling is too fine. If the filler is too thin, when it is squeezed, the radial deformation it can produce will be very limited, so it will not be able to achieve a good sealing effect.

2. The cut is inappropriate. Some stuffing is not cut, but a very long piece. It needs to be cut after arriving on site. If the filler is cut too short, the two sections will not fit together well. It can also cause leaks.

3. The packing gland is too loose. The packing gland cannot produce a certain radial deformation of the packing, resulting in a gap between the packing and the shaft sleeve, which cannot provide a good sealing effect, so there will also be leakage.

4. The packing is installed incorrectly. When installing the packing, the cuts on each piece of packing should be staggered from each other. If not staggered, it will also cause leakage.

5. The packing is seriously worn. After the filler is used for a period of time, there will be normal wear and tear. The degree of wear and specific use time are determined according to the on-site working conditions. If the slurry is very abrasive, the replacement frequency will be higher. At this time, the packing should be replaced in time.
